If you find “live fossil” bone I would suggest radiocarbon dating cross-matched to dendrochronology carbon content for chronological dating. The geological layers construct for dating is largely speculative.

To form fossils you need to bury the subject (how fast is determined by predators access to subject and resistance to decompose) with mineral rich sediment before predators and the environment digest the animal and bones.
